The Community Association

The SDHCA was founded in 1965 and is still totally owned by the Community Association. From the opening to the quite recently the centre has been mostly self funding with the occasional small maintenance grant from the local council. As the building aged the repairs and maintenance bill increased and it was about ten years ago that the committee looked towards grant funding to maintain and improve the community centre.

Major projects undertaken so far include the complete replacement of the stage sound and lighting system (this is now considered to be the best amateur stage in the area), refurbishment of the playgroup room, installation of double glazing and replacement of the exterior woodwork with low maintenance UPVC, the improvement of facilities for the disabled and a new IT suite.

All this work would not have been possible without the assistance of a number of funders. The major contributors have been The Community Foundation, Awards for All, SITA, Proctor and Gamble, The Sir James Knott Trust, Northumberland County Council, The Joicey Trust, The Willan Charitable Trust, The Rothley Trust, The Sherburn House Charity, The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Catherine Cookson Trust, The William Webster Foundation, The DfES, The Seaton Valley Fair Shares, and many, many smaller funders.

When the current refurbishment of the disabled toilets is complete we will be, looking towards re-equipping the kitchen and, perhaps, installing new central heating, both major projects.
